Letter pair typing practice: build smoother keystrokes
Accurate individual keys don't always lead to smooth typing. Some two-letter sequences feel awkward even when you know both keys. Typlora's Fluency Lab helps you measure and practice common combinations like TH, SH and TR without installing software or creating an account.
Why practice letter pairs?
Learning to type TH as a movement is different from learning T and H separately. If you hit T correctly but repeatedly mistype the following H, the pair may deserve practice. Raw error counts hide this because common letters are attempted more often than rare letters.
For example, if you miss TH five times out of 50 attempts, its error rate is 10%. If you miss ST twice out of 100 attempts, that's only 2%. These rates describe your recorded sessions, not a universal difficulty ranking.

| Pair | Where you see it | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| TH | the, other, through, thought | Train TH ↗ |
| SH | share, show, finish, shape | Train SH ↗ |
| ST | street, strong, test, first | Train ST ↗ |
| CH | challenge, choice, check | Train CH ↗ |
| TR | train, try, truth, trust | Train TR ↗ |
| ER | better, other, never | Train ER ↗ |
Understanding pair error rates
Typlora records a pair attempt only when two letters appear next to each other in the reference passage and the first letter was typed correctly. The next letter is the attempt: if you type a different one, the pair gets an error. Spaces, punctuation and bulk input do not count toward this statistic.
The error rate is errors divided by attempts, multiplied by 100. The lab waits for at least eight attempts for a pair before displaying its rate. Older Typlora records lack this denominator and are not retroactively assigned one.
A short practice routine
- Complete a standard one-minute typing test.
- Inspect the Fluency Lab and choose a sufficiently sampled pair with a high error rate.
- Try two 60-second focused drills on that pair.
- Repeat the same standard test format to check whether both accuracy and speed improve.
If your chosen combination isn't present in the built-in word list, the exercise uses the literal pair repeatedly, rather than inventing English vocabulary. Stop and rest if typing causes discomfort.
Local privacy and comparable results
Typing sessions save aggregate attempts and mistakes per letter pair, plus ordinary WPM metrics. The typed passage itself is not retained in your saved result. Each pair has an independent personal best; a TH drill isn't presented as equivalent to a TR drill. You can export your progress as JSON and restore it on another device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I train an uncommon pair?
Yes. Links in the form ?pair=xy#test open an XY drill. Only two letters from A to Z are accepted.
Will this measure physical finger movement?
No. It measures expected characters and browser input events, not which physical key or finger you used.
Are phone results comparable?
Touch keyboards work, but autocorrect and input methods differ. Compare results with similar device and test conditions.
